Tan Cheng Guan (85 years old)

I am a Buddhist. I was introduced to Buddhism at the age of 15, learned to chant sutras, and would visit the temple on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month to chant and eat vegetarian meals. I took refuge under Venerable Ben Dao, the founder of our Buddhist temple, and received the Dharma name “Jue Hai.”

In my youth, I actively participated in the chanting group at the temple, led by a teacher named Mr. Wu. I still remember us chanting the “Great Compassion Mantra,” “Incense Praise,” “Heart Sutra,” “Amitabha Sutra,” and later receiving guidance from Teacher Zheng Jin Chang.

Decades have passed in the blink of an eye, but the days with the chanting group remain vivid in my memory. Back then, the group leader was Yeoh Tai Shan from Pulau Jerejak, later succeeded by Tan Poh Choo. To this day, I still recite the “Shurangama Mantra” in the morning and the “Amitabha Sutra” at night, remaining consistent and disciplined.

I hope that everyone who sees my artwork will feel joy in their hearts. I really enjoy learning pastel art. Even though my hands aren’t as steady and my drawings may not be very refined, I especially love drawing portraits. I believe that as long as I keep trying, I can bring happiness to others. If I have the ability to create art that brings joy, then I feel it’s all worth it. I also hope to pass on the skills taught by our teacher so that everyone can be happy. May all be safe and joyful!
