Ong Yoke Lian (82 years old)
I moved into the settlement when I was 19. I frequently visited the temple to worship, especially on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month. That’s when I also took refuge in Buddhism.

In the early years, the temple was managed by many board members, who were also residents like us. Everyone was enthusiastic, and the temple was full of life. On Buddhist festivals, we helped cook in the kitchen—I was in charge of washing vegetables. The chefs were all from our community. Nowadays, all my old friends have passed, and outsiders handle the cooking during Wesak Day.

For this exhibition, I painted a Bodhi leaf. Although I don't think I'm very “pandai” (good at it), I attend classes just to keep busy and enrich my life. The teachers here are kind and patient. I'm happy here and very satisfied with my work.

Now that I'm older, I don’t have many other places to go. So I come here to pass the time. My hearing isn't great, but my eyes can still distinguish colors. Seeing all the vibrant pastels always lifts my mood. I hope whoever sees my painting will feel happy too!
