Ng Mei Ying (50 years old)
Ever since I learned how to paint with pastels, I’ve practiced almost every day. But my eyes often don’t focus well, and my hands aren’t steady, so my lines turn out wobbly. Still, whenever I send a photo of my painting to my teacher, she always encourages me, saying, “Very good, very good!”
One day my godfather asked, “Why do you always paint flowers?” I replied, “Because flowers are the only thing I can paint!”
Recently, our teacher taught us how to paint Bodhi leaves. I completed one, and I thought it looked beautiful. I’ve also painted many other pastel works and given them to some special people: volunteer Amala, Venerable Dong Ru, Angie Leong, our printmaking class leader Tsuey Ing , and the nun who raised me, Sister Aundrea. I gave Sister two paintings—one with a balloon theme and one for Christmas. She was so happy and even called to say, “Very good! Very good!” Hearing that made me feel especially happy.
I also gave paintings to my childhood friends Celine and Janet. I sincerely hope that everyone who sees my artwork at this Wesak exhibition will enjoy good health and a joyful heart!
