Ng Kwai Lan (67 years old)
I was admitted to the Sungai Buloh Settlememt at 12 and received my education here. As a child, I often joined my friends in temple activities. One year, I was selected to play a page boy in a drama—we had our hair styled and carried a box on our backs. It was very lively and fun!

At 13, I played a soldier. Our temple sister even handmade swords for us. At 14, I got to be one of the Seven Fairies. I also played Zhu Yingtai in a drama with Wang Xin Mei as Liang Shanbo. Back then, our Wesak Day events were very rich—there were dramas, Buddha bathing ceremonies, and sutra chanting. I learned to chant too, though I’d call myself a casual Buddhist—not too devout. I’d say I’m 60% Buddhist.

I value freedom and never formally took refuge. I believe the greatest meaning in life is to do good and help others.

Now, I attend pastel classes at the recreation hut during my free time. These classes are so joyful. The volunteer teachers are gentle, attentive, and energetic. I love their company and guidance.

When it comes to painting, I feel I’m just average—not as diligent as Mei Ying next door. Whenever the teacher hands out paper, I often give it to her because she creates stunning work. I feel a bit ashamed of my own efforts by comparison.
