Laura Chong Yek Lee (81 years old)

I was admitted to the Sungai Buloh Settlement when I was ten years old, and now I’m already 81. These days, I really enjoy drawing with soft pastels. The teachers are all wonderful, and the volunteers are very kind and caring. Drawing with pastels isn’t too difficult for me—especially with the detailed guidance and warm company of the teachers and volunteers. I’m truly grateful for their dedication and patience.

Although I’ve never seen a real Bodhi leaf or Bodhi tree, I particularly enjoy drawing Bodhi leaves. That’s because Teacher Mint always accompanies me while I draw. Every piece we complete together turns out beautifully, and I’m always satisfied with the results.

When I was a child, I used to participate in the activities of the Buddhist Society—that was back in the 1950s. My friends and I would visit the Society’s small Attap House in the Central Section to light incense and worship. I remember one Wesak Day when I dressed up as a little soldier from a martial arts film, waving a prop sword and performing fight scenes with “enemies.” I was only around twelve or thirteen at the time.

What I remember most fondly are the stage performances and Cantonese operas during Wesak Day. Sister Sow Cheng and other senior members of the Buddhist Society would perform brilliantly—the fighting scenes with sticks and spears looked so real. I would watch from dusk till the show ended late at night, reluctant to go home. I especially loved the grand Cantonese operas and short plays. The stage back then was set up on the grassy field in front of the Buddhist Temple, right across from the Hainanese Association.

My happiest memory during Wesak Day was participating in the Buddhist float procession. My good friend Helen Tan and I would start from the gate of the West Ward and walk with the float to the roundabout in front of the main hospital, then circle back to the temple. Along the way, we would chant “Amitabha, Amitabha…” as we walked. Although I rarely burn incense or pray and am just an ordinary member of the temple, Wesak Day has always held a special place in my heart.

On this special day, I sincerely wish everyone peace and good health!
