Woodcut Prints

In the “Engraving Buddhist Affinity” exhibition, Mr. Yeoh Lian Heng, the woodcut printmaking instructor at the Valley of Hope, collaborates with ten resident artists—each over the age of 70—to present 26 Wesak-themed prints that poignantly portray their connection with Buddhism.

These elderly artists, who once missed out on many educational opportunities due to leprosy, are now experiencing an inspiring chapter in life. Through their enthusiasm for learning and artistic expression, they have reclaimed their sense of self and dignity, carving their life stories with grace and pride.

Their artworks recall early encounters with Buddhism and long-past Wesak celebrations in the settlement, capturing both sacred memories and the clarity of faith. With carving knives in hand, they transform years of experience and belief into visual poetry. Each mark is a tribute to life itself—this is not only an artistic feast, but a powerful testament to perseverance, talent, and spiritual strength.
