Pastel and Faux Stained Glass Artwork Story

Introduction

In 2017, Ms Tan Ean Nee, curator of the Story Gallery, began offering pastel art classes in the wards. She successfully guided three residents to complete the Japan Nagomi Art Instructor certification syllabus. She also supported fingerless resident Chuar Gim Tuan in developing a unique painting style using his palms and wrists. Their graduation ceremony and their first solo shows were heart-warming milestones. Since 2018, the pastel artworks of these four artists have been featured in Hopeful Art 2.0 and subsequent charity exhibitions to raise funds for the underprivileged.

In September 2024, Illuminates Reunion, Inspires Hope pastel Faux Stained glass art exhibition made its grand debut, showcasing over 300 handmade pieces and a two-foot-tall rotating lantern composed of eight original woodcut prints by the residents. The exhibition combined Japan’s “Crystal Flower” technique with Mid-Autumn Festival imagery, introduced and taught by artist Ms Sarana Khoo through a charitable workshop. As the first exhibition of its kind in the country, it highlighted the creativity and vitality of Valley of Hope’s residents and volunteers.
