Collective Heart Sutra Creation

Inspired by Venerable Tian Wen, a massive 10-feet by 4-feet rendition of the Heart Sutra was slowly brought to life through a collective carving project. Composed of 269 Chinese characters, this artwork involved over 80 participants—spanning generations from 8-year-old children to an 87-year-old artist—including residents of the Valley of Hope, volunteers, families, and local artists.

Project leader Ms. Tsuji Lam hopes that through carving the Heart Sutra, the wisdom of prajñā and the concept of “dependent origination and emptiness” will not only be etched into wood, but also into the hearts of everyone involved. This was a gentle yet powerful art initiative, a beautiful expression of community spirit and collective creation.
