Title: My Name

Title (Original Language): 我的名

Year: 2017

Words in the Drawing: “My father’s name is Cheong Kow and mother’s name is Koay Feng but they have already gone to heaven.  They gave me the name Cheong Meng but they called me Ah Meng when I was young because they hoped that I would be cleverer (‘Chong Ming’ in Chinese means clever), but I studied only until standard three.  In those days, we were very poor and I had many siblings.  I have four elder sisters and three elder brothers, four younger brothers and three younger sisters.  My father had two wives and my mother was his second wife.  At the time, we were too poor to attend school so I followed my mother to tap rubber when I was 8 years old.  I would attend afternoon session classes after I returned home from the estate.  I would wake up between 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning to wash and wipe the rubber containers.  I stopped schooling when I was over ten years old and sold noodle soup until I was 15 years old.  I think I am stupid as I didn’t study much. I think my parents have named me wrongly. ”

Title: Fighting Fish

Title (Original Language): 打架鱼

Year: 2017

Words in the Drawing: “When I was around 10 plus, I would catch fighting fish in the river with my friends, I would keep them in a glass bottle and then feed them.  I would bring my fishes to fight with others’ fishes.  I would be very happy if my fighting fish won.  It was exciting to watch the fishes fight; the fishes would swim round and round and fight until their faces are blue black. It is too bad that children nowadays spend more time on computers, and not interested to watch fish fighting, what a waste it is.”
